Підвищення надійності та зниження матеріалоємності виробів особливо важлива у такій галузі, як важке машинобудування, оскільки воно є матеріалоємним. Але для створення економічних надійних високопродуктивних машин з мінімальною вагою конструктори повинні мати достовірну інформацію про міцність, та вплив концентраторів напружень, застосовуваних конструкційних матеріалів в умовах, близьких до експлуатаційних. Оскільки більшість деталей машин працює в умовах динамічного навантаження, то одним з основних критеріїв, що визначають експлуатаційні параметри машин, є опір втомному руйнуванню деталей, що входять у ці машини. Since most machine components operate under dynamic loading, one of the key criteria determining the operational parameters of machines is the resistance to fatigue failure of the components that make up these machines.
